Clark County Courthouse On Missouri’s Most Endangered Historic Places List

Clark County’s 137 year old courthouse has been listed as one of Missouri’s most endangered historic places by The Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation, (Missouri Preservation), Missouri’s only statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, supporting, and coordinating historic preservation activities throughout the State.
Making the list this year are:

Deville Motor Hotel – City of St. Louis
Harry S. Truman National Historic Landmark District -Independence (Jackson County)
Janssen Place Entry Gates – Kansas City (Jackson County)
African-American Schools Across Missouri
Lincoln School of Vandalia – Vandalia (Audrain County)
Banneker School – Parkville (Platte County)
Wheatley-Provident Hospital – Kansas City (Jackson County)
The MKT Railroad Bridge – (Cooper and Howard Counties)
Courthouses Across Missouri-Specifically the Clark County Courthouse – Kahoka (Clark County)
Mullanphy Emigrant Home – City of St. Louis .
“The Clark County Courthouse is threatened by the lack of funding and no maintenance budget for the courthouses which was constructed in the 1870’s. The roof structure, its cupola, windows and soffits have severe damage and are in need of immediate repair,” the group states on its website.
Clark County’s courthouse is deteriorating from age and a lack of maintenance over the years. Cracks in walls, floors and exterior stucco can be seen throughout the building, and last fall a chimney was removed due to safety concerns.
The county has an emergency plan to reinforce the sagging structure, but that plan has not yet been implemented.
