 Wyaconda Alumni Attend 93rd Annual Banquet

The alumni of Wyaconda High School celebrated the 93rd annual alumni banquet on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Wyaconda School gym.
President Barb Yancy welcomed the alumni to the banquet, and Rev. Ernest Deatrick gave the invocation. One hundred seventeen alumni and guests enjoyed the meal of turkey, ham, beef and all the trimmings catered by Steve’s Family Dining.
A business meeting followed the meal. Barb Yancy welcomed the seniors of 2008 who had graduated from Wyaconda Elementary into the Alumni Association. Baillie Pruitt gave the response for the class of 2008. The classes of 1938, 1948, 1958, and 1983 were honored. Glenna Lipper gave the response for the class of 1948. Evelyn Butler responded for the class of 1958. There were no alumni present for the classes of 1938 and 1983.
The recording secretary Kenner Hutchinson read the minutes of last year’s meeting, and Mary Dieterich gave the treasurer’s report. Cookie Howell gave the necrology report, and a moment of silence was observed in memory of alumni who had died in the past year.
Winners of special awards were Phyllis Hutchinson (1935) — oldest female alumna; Elvin Spicknall (1941) — oldest male alumnus; Lyla and Mack Barber (1945) — alumni traveling the farthest (from Louisiana); and Rev. Ernest and Dora Mae (1943) Deatrick — couple in attendance married the longest. Several door prizes were also awarded.
Alumni members Dick Pruitt, Joe Humes, and Barb Pruitt, who are also school board members told the group about the school closing and their meeting with the state board. At this time, the future of the school building is uncertain, but the alumni voted to have the banquet at the school in the future if at all possible. When more information is available, the officers of the alumni committee will inform the alumni about plans for next year.
The group elected next year’s officers. They are President Barb Yancy, Vice President Mark St. Clair, Corresponding Secretary/Treasurer Mary Dieterich, and Recording Secretary Cookie Howell.
The meeting was then adjourned. The alumni enjoyed bidding on items in the silent auction and visiting for the rest of the evening.
