MU Offers Flagship Scholarship for Clark County Students
The University of Missouri in Columbia is offering a four-year, $15,000 per year, Flagship Scholarship for students from Clark County. The scholarship will help cover tuition and fees, as well as other educational expenses, including room, board and books at MU. Students who are the first in their family to attend college receive priority consideration. Flagship Scholars are also ambassadors for education, spending at least 20 hours a year promoting education and college attendance in their hometowns. The scholarship may be used at MU with no restrictions relative to the student’s intended degree, major or academic unit.
To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from Clark County High School or have a legal residence in Clark County. Candidates should apply for admissions to MU and complete the on-line MU scholarship application by December 1, 2008. After that date, eligible candidates will be invited to submit a resume, application letter, and essay. Selection of the recipients will be made in spring 2009. High-school seniors, transfer students, and current college students may apply.
“We’re very excited that Clark County is one of the four counties in Missouri that have a Flagship Scholarship. MU Extension is working closely with the Mizzou Alumni Association, as well as MU Admissions and Student Financial Aid to make people aware of the program,” said Debby Whiston, MU Extension County Program Director. “Interested persons can contact our office at 660-727-3339 for more information.”
Dena Eddleman was awarded the first Clark County Flagship Scholarship in 2008. The University of Missouri Flagship Scholars program ultimately will provide a full-ride, four-year scholarship to a student in each Missouri county. Currently, scholarships are available in Audrain, Caldwell, Clark, and Marion Counties. Private gifts and donations are funding the program.
“I was the first in my own family to earn a college degree, and I certainly would not be where I am today without support from my family, mentors and the community,” MU Chancellor Brady Deaton said. “The goal of the MU Flagship Scholars Program is to provide similar opportunities to students across the state. I couldn’t be more excited about this program and its potential to change Missouri students’ lives.”
