Clark Co. R-1 Board Honors Running Fox Students For Top Ten Map Score

By Kevin Fox

“I’m just very proud of these students and their parents should be just as proud of them as well. I will continue to expect good things from you as you have showed all of us what you are capable of!” stated Julie Brotherton, Clark County Elementary Principal at the beginning of the Clark County R-1 School regular school board meeting on Thursday, May 14.
Brotherton was speaking to a group of Running Fox students who were being recognized by the Board for placing in the top ten in the state of Missouri in MAP scores. The recognition is based on the previous year’s score meaning the 6th graders being recognized had the dual honor of being in the top ten for both their 4th & 5th grade school years. 6th graders present to accept their awards were: Haley Boulware, Renae Buschling, John Corvia, Levi Happs, and Eric Burgess. Other class members but not present: Mason Couch, Ryan Crowell, Joshua Damon, Cole Davis, Shawna Doty, Dylan Happs, Hunter Kirchner, Lama Kelsey, Caitlin McCluskey, Weston Schorr, and Dakota Shedd. 5th graders present to be recognized for their 2008 MAP scores were: Ryan Corvia, Heather Dunlap, Jennifer Gates, Dakota Overhulser, Adrianna Riney, Ian Riney, Luke Sedore, Jamie Steele, and Kelsey Wright. Other class members but not present: Cassidy Adams, Michael Axtell, John Denning, Bobbie Haskins, Joel Howren, Wednesday McCluskey, Brayton Prewitt, James Allencook, Christopher Brotherton, Brian Buckner, Kaitlyn Happs, Shaw Hunziker, Dakota Jacobson, Madelyn Kelly, Dylan Lefler, Robert Morris, Holly Scobee, and Trenton Toops. Aside from the students being present for the Top Ten certificates there were many proud parents as well. Teachers Jan Oilar (present) and Esther Justice were also congratulated for their efforts.
In other action, the Board voted to accept the bid of William Dunning for the building Trades Class to build a home. Two bids were entered, but following the recommendation of the class instructor due to the project allowing the students to gain a wider array of experience and increase different skills as well as the close proximity of the project to the school, the Board went with Dunning’s bid of $14,500.
Donna Oilar and Kay Sprague reported on career ladder. Superintendent Kracht added that he felt the program was a very positive thing in keeping and attracting quality staff, but added his only concern was its future. An ever-challenging budget meant the program was safe for at least the next couple years, but after that he was unsure. Board President Bill Schutte then asked Flood how the cutting of the career ladder would impact the district. Flood responded, “Perhaps very little. Many teachers go beyond what is required by career ladder or simply do not report all the things they do which could be used towards career ladder goals. But it’s just nice to be recognized for your efforts.”
There was also a great deal of discussion surrounding “Stimulus Money” that the district will be receiving. It can only be used on new programs or new training, making it difficult to plan a program because the life of the Stimulus money is only two years. More than likely a great deal of the money will be used to fund new training for existing staff as well as programs.
There was also a great deal of discussion surrounding the school’s health insurance with several different programs to be explored. A great deal of what that insurance program will look like when the school works on its final budget and knows exactly how much state aid it will receive. Presently the district is in a 14-school consortium and it costs the district $459 per employee per month.
Class sizes were discussed with Running Fox running steady at nearly 100 students total. Class sizes are as follows Kindergarten – 20, 1st Grade – 14, 2nd Grade – 13, 3rd Grade – 20. 4th Grade 22, and 5th Grade 10. Black Hawk has the following class sizes: Kindergarten – 48, 1st Grade – 61, 2nd Grade – 56, 3rd Grade – 45, 4th Grade – 50, and 5th grade – 55. There will be 3 sections for the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades with the possibility of adding another section for the 3rd grade as the 2009 –2010 school year approaches and a more exact count of students is realized.
The Board also approved the overnight trip to the state golf tournament for Zach Nixon and Michael Campbell, as well as the state track tournament if Clark County athletes qualify.
