CCR-1 School Board Sets Make Up Days
Clark County R-1 District school students will have to stay in classes until a little closer until Christmas this year, thanks to the October flu outbreak that cancelled classes for three days.
At the Monday night, November 16 meeting of the CCR-1 School Board, members voted to make up two days on Monday and Tuesday, December 21-22. Christmas break had been scheduled to begin on Monday, December 21.
“We missed three days, and we have to make up two of them,” said CCR-1 Superintendent Ritchie Kracht. The district has an extra day built into the calendar.
Board members and administrators discussed the situation, noting that some teacher already had travel plans, before deciding on the make up days.
“You’ll get more effective teaching earlier in the year, rather than adding the days on at the end,” stated High School Principal Jason Harper.
Board member Carmen Arnold agreed, stating that two weeks is a very long time for younger students to be out of the classroom..
The board heard two programs reports from Running Fox Principal Ryan Bergeson.
The Parents As Teachers program listed several strengths, including an increase in teen parents enrolling in the program, a highly qualified parent educator and a good referral system with the Clark County Health Department.
Concerns include an increased number of teen parents, WIC no longer schedules group meetings, and constantly changing enrollments.
The Parents As Teachers program serves 50-60 families annually.
Mr. Bergeson also reported on the Preschool program, which serves a maximum of 40 students. Program strengths include preparing students for the transition into kindergarten, social integration and serving students based on needs.
A lack of state funding is the major concern for the program.
In other business, the board:
-Approved a snow removal bid from Stephen Deatrick for $50 per hour.
-Mr. Kracht reported that the preliminary Annual Performance Report was received from DESE, and that the district should have meet 14 of 14 goal, qualifying it for a Distinction in Performance award for the fourth year in a row.
