Auditions For Great River Players’ Performance of “South Pacific” To Be Held This Week

Auditions for the Great River Players spring production of “South Pacific” will be Thursday and Friday, March 6th & 7th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm and Saturday, March 8th from 1 – 3 pm at GRP’s home, 17 S 6th St, Keokuk, Iowa.  The cast will include 20 – 25 men and 15 – 20 women to fill a variety of title and ensemble role, as well as a young boy and young girl between the ages of 7 and 12.

Those auditioning should have a 60 – 90 second song prepared, and will be asked to read from the script and do some basic dance steps.  A number of crew positions also need to be filled and would be the ideal show for anyone who has ever wanted to be involved in a stage production.

“South Pacific” is a musical composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan.  The plot centers on an American nurse stationed on a South Pacific Island during WWII who falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner, but struggles to accept his mixed-race children.  A secondary romance, between a US Lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, explores his fears of the social consequences should he marry his Asian sweetheart.  The issue of racial prejudice is candidly explored throughout the musical, most controversially in the lieutenant’s song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught”.  Supporting characters include a comic petty officer and the Tonkinese girl’s mother.

The production, under the direction of David Wendt and Bobbi Lutzen will be performed Friday, May 9th through Sunday, May 11th with two shows on Saturday.

“South Pacific” is produced by special arrangement with Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals, 601 West 26th St, New York, NY 10001.
