US 61 Remains Closed at Alexandria Due to High Water

HANNIBAL – Monday, July 14, US 61 at Alexandria in Clark County remains closed due to high water. A large cottonwood tree has fell onto the road after storms this weekend, and MoDOT crews are unable to get into the area to remove tree until the water recedes.

Recent hydrological reports predict the Mississippi River should be off of the majority of US 61 sometime Tuesday morning at which time crews will remove the tree, clean mud and debris off of the road, make any needed shoulder repairs and open one or both lanes of US 61 to traffic by Tuesday afternoon.

Motorists traveling into Iowa will continue using Des Moines River Bridge at St. Francisville by proceeding north on US 27 to Wayland and continue north on US 27 through St. Francisville into Iowa. Detour signs are in place to advise motorists of these alternate routes.

MoDOT reminds motorists it is dangerous to drive into water-covered roads. The roadway will be opened to motorists as soon as the floodwater recedes and the roadway has been cleared for safe travel.
