Cable Lineup Shuffled, Sewer Issues Addressed
Kahoka customers have found their favorite channels changed this week as the Kahoka Cable re-organized its cable lineup to handle the new lower cost “basic” package.

Kahoka Cable viewers have already noticed that the channel lineup has changed.
“The channels have been rearranged,” Alderman Jeff Wood told board members at Monday’s city council meeting.
The channels were changed to accommodate the new “basic” package, as well as because of contract agreements with providers. A listing of the new channels can be found on Page 14 of this issue.
Wood also reported that the equipment necessary to proved the “basis” cable package will arrive soon, so the city will make that switch as soon as possible.
The city currently has 588 cable customers.
The board also gave a first reading to a new parking ordinance, which will give law enforcement more discretion as to what “impedes the movement of traffic.” The current ordinance reads that one lane of traffic must remain clear.
“It gives us the discretion to say ‘this is a danger’ and have something moved,” said City Attorney April Wilson.

The board took the first step to addressing problems with the aging sanitary sewer system, accepting VISU-Sewer’s bid of over $228,000 to inspect all 90,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer. Breaks, separations and other problems will be identified, and the city will decide how to correct the problem. The city will spread the project over two years.
In other business, the board:
-Approved building permits for Jason Brown, Wes Billings and Karen Butts.
-Discussed a proposal by the NEMO Regional Planning Commission to hold a tire collection. More information will be requested before a decision is made.
Jim Sherwood reported that the bid opening for the Farmer’s Market shelter project will be Jan. 28, and the city could award the bid in February.
-City Attorney April Wilson discussed placing a “use tax” question on the April ballot.
-Police Chief Bill Conger reported 105 calls for service in December. Wood reminded Conger to contact people pushing snow across streets, as that is against city ordinance.
-At the recommendation of the Cemetery Board, they accepted the low bid of $23,250 from Randy Stewart of Salem, IA. Among the cemeteries currently mowed by Stewart is Mt. Pleasant, IA, which is 70 acres.
-Discussed cemetery rules concerning vaults and the number of burials per plot.
