SAMMY BYRL KAY

Sammy Byrl Kay, 73, of Revere, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 2021.

Sammy was born on October 23, 1947, in Keokuk, IA, the son of the late Bryl Kay and Florence (Means) Wrieden.

Sammy was a free spirt, he enjoyed fighting, hunting, gardening with his children and grandchildren, telling war stories, and watching MASH along with Days Of Our Lives. 

On Thanksgiving he would be up bright and early preparing the meal for his family, a tradition he held close. 

In his earlier years he spent his time camping and remodeled houses. 

He will be greatly missed by all that knew him including his dogs, cats, and ducks.

Sammy is survived by his significant other, Bryanna Marshall of Revere, three sons; Sammy (Song) Kay of Hamilton, IL, Elmer (Donna) Kay of Keokuk, IA, Richard Kay of Revere, four daughters; Tammy (Brian) Egley of Murray, NE, Rachel (Kylee Nichols) Kay of Kahoka, Cheyenne Kay of Keokuk, IA, Leeza (William) Critser of Kahoka, twenty-four grandchildren, Deacan, Nicki, Dominic, Breanna, Josh, Emily, Christa, Elijah, Jeremy, Carissa, Carey, Chris, Rachel, Elizabeth, Noah, Madison, Jordan, Marrek, Ragan, Aidan, Carl, Hudson, Dan, Todd, two brothers, Rodney (Sue) Kay, Richard “Dick” (Lynda) Wrieden, and one sister, Sue Harpin. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Frank Wrieden, a brother, David Kay, and a brother-in-law, George Harpin.

Funeral Services honoring the life of Sammy were conducted at 4P.M. on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at the Wilson & Triplett Funeral Home in Kahoka. 

A visitation was held from 2P.M. until the time of service on Thursday. 

Pastor Shawn McAfee officiated the service. 

Full military honors were provided by the American Legion Herman Blum Post #192 and the VFW Post #4342.  

Memorial contributions in memory of Sammy were suggested to the family with checks payable to Leeza Critser.

Acknowledgement of Military Service

The members of the United States Army, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars hereby acknowledge that Comrade Sammy Byrl Kay served our country for three years in the United States Army.

He served as a Light Weapons Infantryman during the Vietnam War, serving one year in Vietnam.  

He attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5).

He was awarded and authorized to wear the following decorations:

Air Medal

Army Good Conduct Medal

National Defense Service Medal

Vietnam Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device

Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge (P-14 Rofle)

He enlisted 4 January 1965, received an honorable discharge 11 January 1968.

The caissons have been muffled and the flag lowered for our comrade, who joined the staff of the supreme commander 26 September 2021.
