Hopp Named New City Clerk; FY 2009 Budget Approved
By Mike Scott
The City of Kahoka will have a new city clerk starting July 1. The Board of Aldermen made the hiring of current city treasurer Sandi Hopp official. Hopp will replace Linda Plenge, who will retire at the end of June.
After making a few last-minute adjustments during a public hearing on the 2009 City Budget, the board approved a $3.27 million dollar budget for fiscal year 2009, which begins April 1. The budget includes capital outlays for such projects as water line replacement, cable system rebuild and digital conversion, and sewer extension into area which are seeking annexation.
The board awarded the bid for cemetery mowing to Jarvis Construction for $18,600. The only other bid was received late, prompting a discussion about opening late bids.
“It was our opinion that you had only one qualified bid,” Cemetery Board member Wayne Blum said. “It also happened to be the low bid.”
In other business, the board:
–Approved a bid from New Century Computers for a new computer and monitor for City Hall. The total cost was $1580.
–Awarded the bid for boring (a part of the waterline replacement contract) to C-Comm Construction for $14,250.
–Approved a resolution compensating Lowell and Elizabeth Jackson for the crossing of the property for future annexation.
–Approved a building permit for a storage building for the Clark County Health Dept.
–Appointed Sheri Brunk to the Cemetery Board.
–Discussed a written complaint concerning squirrel feeding. Police Chief Bill Conger will as both parties to attend the March 24 board meeting.
–Approved Friday, April 25 as Kahoka’s Arbor Day.
–Discussed the need for a larger equipment truck for the fire department.
–Agreed to post new signs at cemetery stating rule changes.
–Discussed sidewalk repairs. General consent was to get bids on sidewalks damaged by waterline replacement project first.
