Kahoka Man Wins Hannibal Cannibal 5K
Saturday, July 4th marked the 31st running of the Hannibal Cannibal and the heat and humidity didn’t slow down the participants of this year’s race. This year’s event was a huge success and saw nearly 1,900 participants from 29 states, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The race raised over $80,000 for Hannibal Regional’s Legacy of Hope Campaign. These funds will be used in Hannibal to assist with purchasing a new linear accelerator along with building renovations at the Cary Cancer Center and in Kirksville to help with the construction of a new cancer center to provide radiation oncology. Clark County is set to see nearly $14.7 million in highway and bridge projects move toward construction under Missouri’s newly approved 2027-2031 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the five-year STIP on July 1. The plan lists transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031. Statewide, the STIP makes available $13 billion in federal and state revenue for all modes of transportation, including $9.3 billion in contractor awards for road and bridge construction. KAHOKA — A July Fourth time capsule opening on the east side of the square brought excitement, disappointment and a strong reminder that even damaged history is still history. The capsule, removed Thursday from Sever Memorial Library, was opened Saturday morning during a public ceremony led by Becki Krueger. A crowd gathered as Krueger made the final cuts into the large metal tank, which was dated 1923. Larry and Ilene (Nichols) Howell will celebrate 60 years of marriage on July 2, 2026. They are both natives of Clark County, Larry graduating from La Belle High School and Ilene from Kahoka High School. The couple were united in marriage on July 2, 1966 at the Kahoka Baptist Church with Gerald Davidson officiating. The wedding party consisted of Francis Benson as Best Man, and Darlene (Riney) Farren Maid of Honor. Kahoka Time Capsule to Be Opened July 4, 2026; Community Invited to Contribute to New 2076 Capsule
The time capsule located at Sever Memorial Library in Kahoka is scheduled to be excavated by the City of Kahoka prior to July 4, 2026. The capsule will be turned over to the City of Kahoka and the family of Bettie and Frank Evermon for a public celebration. KAHOKA, Mo. — The Clark County R-1 School Board approved its annual budget June 11 while discussing concerns about state funding, future building needs at Black Hawk Elementary and the district’s Career Ladder program. Superintendent Lyndel Whittle told the board the district will receive $6,875 per student in state funding, though the amount should be $7,145. He said that difference represents about a $290,000 loss for the district. “We’re not going to get the funding we’re supposed to get,” Whittle said while reviewing the end of Missouri’s legislative session.
