Food Waters Threaten US 61 at Alexandria Again

HANNIBAL – Once again, MoDOT anticipates the possibility of temporarily closing U.S. 61 near Alexandria in Clark County due to flooding early Tuesday. The Mississippi River is about two feet above flood stage and is expected to crest sometime late Tuesday.

Message boards are in place, and crews are monitoring the area to determine if it needs to be closed. MoDOT reminds motorists that it is dangerous to drive into water-covered roads.

If the road is closed, motorists will need to follow the detoured route or consider other routes into and out of southeastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. Crews will open the roadway as soon as the floodwater recedes and has been cleared for safe travel.

Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at www.modot.org or call 1-888 ASK MODOT (888-275-6636) before starting a trip to the area.
