Blood Donor Becomes Blood Recipient

“All I could think about was what could I do to thank the person or persons who had donated the blood that was now making such a big difference in my life”, stated Becky Neves. Neves herself a blood donator with more than six gallons of blood given, found herself in a position where she was no longer able to donate. Becky is from Clark County and donated since 1982. The story that she tells comes directly from her heart and it’s very evident how much it means to her. She stated, “ I know how much the gift of blood means, as I have a background in nursing and I care for people, so I hit every blood drive that I could. It never even crossed my mind that there might come a time when I would need blood as well. I remember when the doctor called and said that my blood level had gotten dangerously low and I would be needing a blood transfusion, that what goes around, comes around even though it’s not what you always want. Looking at the blood flowing into my arm for a change instead of it being withdrawn, I wondered whose blood it was. I also would have liked to give them a hug. In wondering who it might have been I thought it might have been a neighbor or someone who I will never know. Over the past year I have received around six units of blood and it’s a scary thing and I begin to think what if my children or other family members would need blood and if not them then someone else’s daughter, son, mother or father. But receiving the gift of blood made me so much more aware of its importance and what precious gift it really is. One unit of blood helps three people and now I am one of those three people. But what I kept think about while I was receiving the blood was what could I do now, since I can no longer give blood. My decision was to share with your readers and the community just how much that gift has meant to me and how it has touched my life and continues to. It’s often hard to imagine who might be receiving your blood when you donate it, you know it may be someone in the next community or a good friend, but in this case it was your neighbor and I cannot thank those of you who donated enough for your gift, and please participate if you are able, there are lives depending upon it.”
For those who would like to give the gift of blood the next Blood drive will be September 10 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 P.M. at the Kahoka Christian Church.
