By Mike Scott

Clark County’s overall testing scores reported on the recently-released Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports improved, but the district again failed to meet the target scores in Communication Arts. The last time the district achieved the AYP goal in Communication Arts was 2005.
The CCR-1 School Board reviewed the scores at its Thursday, August 12 meeting.
The required scores increase each year as part of the requirements of the No Child Left Behind act.
In Communication Arts, the district as a whole scored 52.7 percent proficiency. The target proficiency for 2010 was 67.4 percent.
Only Running Fox Elementary topped the goal, scoring 68.8. The Middle School met the standard based on a “safe harbor” provision, despite scoring only 51.3 percent. The High School scored 67.2 percent, close enough to pass with “confidence interval” allowance. Black Hawk dropped six points from last year, scoring 44.9% proficient.
“This has been pretty devastating. I was very disappointed and so is all of the staff,” said Black Hawk principal Julie Brotherton.
“We have a plan to improve, and it will be our focus all year long.”
The District met it Math AYP goal of 63.3 percent proficient, with a district score of 61, meeting the “confidence interval.” Running Fox again led the way, scoring 83.3 percent. The Middle School passed with 63.9 percent, and the High School had 67.8 percent. Black Hawk passed using DESE’s “growth” measurement, with a 48.3 percent proficiency.
