Kahoka Street Improvements Starting This Week

The streets of Kahoka should see some improvement this week, as the Kahoka Board of Aldermen approved spending $100,000 during a short meeting Monday night, September 19.
About 30 blocks will receive a chip and seal surface, while eight and a half blocks will get a hot asphalt overlay.
In addition, the parking lot and driveway for the swimming pool at O-MAK-O-HAK Park will be resurfaced, and the walking trail will be sealed.
“All together, it will cost right at $100,000,” said City Assistant Jim Sherwood.
The project, being done by W.L. Miller from Hamilton, IL, will begin this week.
The board also took action to adjust the city’s voting wards, based on population changes found in the 2010 census. Generally, the line shifts about a block to the west, as Kahoka’s population continues move to its west side. Each ward has 1039 residents, as of the census.
The board instructed City Attorney April Wilson to draft an ordinance the change the ward boundaries.
The council also discussed the city’s incinerator, which is not working. A replacement will cost approximately $618. The board agreed to the purchase, and also agreed that it needs to be secured and locked, with only Bill Young having keys.
In other business, the council:
–Discussed repairs need to the lawn mower at the city’s water plant at Wayland.
–Approved spending approximately $4000 to update the city’s cable system to meet FCC requirements for the warning system.
–Alderman Curtis Mack also complained that announcements on Channel 47 is not being kept current. Mack suggested that the city consider operating the channel, with any income going back into the cable system.
