City of Kahoka Modifies Voting Precincts

By Mike Scott

The City of Kahoka approved a redistricting ordinance following a public hearing held Monday, November 21.
The change will affect voters in four blocks between Jefferson and Washington, between Elm Street and Clark Street. Those voters, previously in the city’s west ward, will now be in the east ward.
“The change was necessary as a result of the 2010 census,” said City Assistant Jim Sherwood. “The change will create two district with 1039 people in each district.”
The voting boundaries run from the south edge of Kahoka, north to Union, west to Jefferson, north again to College, east to West Avenue, and then to the north edge of Kahoka.
There were no public comments on the proposal, which was approved after the board of aldermen convened their meeting.
The board discussed a request from Bill Ramsey to place a mobile home on his property in Kahoka, with the possibility of added several more mobile homes in the future.
Sherwood explained that the city’s ordinance requires every residences to be connect to a city sewer. Another ordinance states that there can only be one residence per property, which would mean Ramsey would have to subdivide the property before adding the trailer.
The board instructed Sherwood to work with Ramsey to help him plan the best course of action.
The board tabled consideration of the Downtown Enhancement Grant bids, as Alderman Curtis Mack was absent.
The board also discussed the renewal of the Ameren Electric contract.
