Next Tuesday, November 3, Clark County voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots for local, state, and national candidates. In Clark County, there are only two contested local races John Campbell and DaKota Hopp are running for Clark County Assessor, and Joe Humes and Paul Brotherton want to be the next Western District Commissioner. The Media submitted questions to each candidate. Below are their answers.
John Campbell
Republican Candidate for Clark County Assessor
What motivated you to run for the office of Clark County Assessor?
My decision to run for the office was based on wanting to make a difference and serve the residents of our county. I wanted to give the people a choice if they felt they were not being treated equally. I made the decision earlier this past spring, filed for the position, campaigned and won the Primary election held in August.
What are your goals if elected Clark County Assessor?
One of my goals for the office is to always put the taxpayer first. The assessor works for the people and that should never be forgotten. Equal treatment and respect for every person is also extremely important to me. Another goal is to contact each resident, and let them know the assessor needs to come and look at their property. Just showing up without notice is very disrespectful.
Why are you the best candidate for the office?
We have elected officials to office with no prior experience in the past. With the newly elected assessor not being sworn into office until September 1st 2021, allows me time to complete the required training and certification as required for the position. Annual continuing education is also required. I can fulfill this requirement as well. My willingness to educate and learn and to help people in any way I can, is another reason to elect me.
Dakota Hopp
Write-In Candidate for Clark County Assessor
What motivated you to run for the office of Clark County Assessor?
Before the primary election, I decided not to run out of respect for a previous employer running. I did not feel that it was the right thing to do no matter who the previous employer was. After the primary election was over, I decided that it was time to take the leap and try for the position as a write in. I had considered it for several years and felt like this was the right time. I enjoyed being a county employee and know that I could pick things up right away and continue with the job that needs to be done.
What are your goals if elected Clark County Assessor?
Being the County Assessor is not an easy job. There is more involved that most people do not see from the outside. I have experienced this over the years of working under previous Assessors and working with our local and surrounding Assessors’ Offices in my current job.
I would like to provide the public with more information and understanding of the duties that the Assessor has, and how that job affects our county. I plan for the Assessors’ Office to be able to work well with the other county offices to get the job done throughout the year more efficiently and smoothly for our county.
I plan to use the current programs in the office to their highest capability. These programs are designed to make the office operate smoothly and efficiently, as long as the necessary experience is in the office.
Why are you the best candidate for the office?
I am the best candidate for the Clark County Assessor because I have worked in that office. I have experience. I want to research ways the office can improve under my leadership. I am willing to find ways to make the office run better for our county, if they exist. Things are always changing, for better or worse, but I have the experience necessary to work with the public to provide assistance and information on real & personal property in our county. I am active in the community and as your Assessor I will get the job done to the best of my ability.
Joseph Humes
