The matchup between the Clark County Indians and the South Shelby Cardinals was expected to be a good contest, and both teams delivered on expectations. Both teams came into the contest with 3-1 records.
Clark County won the toss and deferred possession to start the game. South Shelby’s offense punted away their first possession.
The Indians gained three first downs on their opening drive, but penalties pushed them back and they punted.
Back and forth the teams gained yards, but were force to punt the ball. At the half, the score was tied at zero.
The Indians went three and out on their opening possession of the second half, and the Cardinals did the same, but a shanked punt from deep in their own territory gave Clark County the ball on the Cardinal 27-yard line.
Three plays later, Callan Wheeler connected with Collin Hunziker in the end zone, and Clark County broke the ice 6-0. Hunziker’s extra-point kick was deflected.
The Cardinals responded with an 11 play drive covering 69 yards, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by PJ Schmidt. South’s extra point kick was good, and the Cardinals took a 7-6 lead with 2:51 left in the third quarter.
Clark County started its march again, but Jonny Shinn coughed up the ball. Fortunately, the Indians retained possession. Wheeler would connect with Lucus Eddleman down the sideline to the five-yard line. The Cardinal defense stood their ground, pushing Clark County back and recording a sack on Wheeler, and the Indians turned the ball over on downs.
South Shelby used the clock wisely on their next drive, burning almost eight minutes before scoring again with 1:39 left to take a 13-6 lead.
The Indians had one more shot, but came up short on a fourth down attempt, and with 45 seconds left, South Shelby got the ball and took a knee.
The Indian offense totaled 224 years, and the Cardinals had 243. Wheeler passed for 71 yards, and completed nine of 16 throw. Hunziker had 27 yard in receptions, and Eddleman had 20.
On the ground, Shinn carried the load for the Indians with 78 yard. Wyatt Randall pounded out 61 yards against a tough line, andWheeler scrambled for 54.
The Indians host 4-1 Centralia on Friday. The Panthers were defeated 28-7 by Monroe City this week.
