Just a week after approving its 2023-24 wage ordinance, the Kahoka City Council approved increasing pay for the Kahoka Police Department, the pool manager, and the Fire Chief.
In the ordinance, Police Chief Mike Newbold’s salary was set at $47,700. In their Monday, April 10, meeting, board members voted to raise that to $55,000. In addition, they voted to raise officer pay from $12 to “up to $18”, plus uniform allowance.
The board also approved the hiring of David Dudley as a part-time officer. Dudley has been a part-time deputy in Knox County for several years.
The board also increased the pool manager Kourtney Meinhardt’s salary from $4500 per season to $6000 per season. The proposal passed on a 3-1 vote, with Alderman Larry Young dissenting, saying it was “too much increase”.
Fire Chief Mick Wood’s monthly salary was increased from $200 to $250 per month. The pool manager and Fire Chief wages were not included in the wage ordinance passed April 3.
Mayor Tony Anderson, and Aldermen Les Billings and Jerry Malone were sworn in at the start of the meeting.
In other business, the council:
•Hired three summer employees.
•Approved GilmoreBell as the legal counsel for the water system bond project.
•Fire Chief Mick Wood reported on training for firefighters, and developing response guidelines.
•Alderman Young reported he had spoken to the mowing contractor.
•Alderman Malone reported that truck parking permit bills had not been sent out.
•The board discussed the need to add fences to the city’s building permit, noting there is a fence on city property.
“It has to be fixed,” said City Attorney Brett Bozarth.
