After a thrilling overtime victory the previous week, the Clark County Indians faced a tough challenge on the road against the Westran Hornets, falling 22-20 in a game that saw the Indians rally in the second half only to come up just short.
Westran struck first, marching 66 yards on their opening drive to score, though they missed the conversion, taking a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Clark County’s offense struggled early, punting on both of their first-quarter possessions. In the second quarter, Westran extended their lead, driving 96 yards to go up 14-0 after a successful two-point conversion.
The Indians’ defense kept them in the game late in the second quarter, forcing a Westran punt, but Clark County was unable to score before halftime, heading into the locker room down 14-0.
Momentum shifted quickly in the third quarter. Westran’s onside kick attempt was scooped up by junior lineman Ean Smelter, who rumbled to the Hornets’ 11-yard line. Just a few plays later, Corrick Hunziker punched in a two-yard touchdown to put Clark County on the board, cutting the deficit to 14-6.
Westran threatened on their next drive but was stopped on downs by the Indians’ defense deep in Clark County territory. The defense kept up the pressure, with Landon Young blocking a Westran punt to give the Indians prime field position at the Hornets’ 9-yard line. Hunziker took advantage, scoring his second touchdown of the game, and then catching a two-point conversion pass from Chayse Webster to tie the game at 14-14.
Clark County continued to roll, with their defense forcing Westran to punt from deep in their own territory after two big sacks. The Indians capitalized, and five plays later, Webster ran it in from four yards out, giving Clark County a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.
However, Westran answered with a methodical 62-yard, 14- play drive to retake the lead, 22-20, with a little over six minutes remaining. Clark County’s offense had two more chances to respond but was hampered by a pair of costly fumbles. On their final drive, with the game on the line, Webster’s pass was intercepted, sealing the win for the Hornets.
Clark County finished with 164 rushing yards, led by Chayse Webster with 88 yards, while Hunziker added 30 yards and two touchdowns. Webster also contributed a rushing touchdown of his own. Despite the loss, the Indians’ defense showed flashes, forcing key turnovers and limiting Westran to 80 rushing yards.
The Indians will look to rebound in their regular-season finale as they host the Highland Cougars next Friday.
