The Antioch 4-H Club built a Free Little Library, and on Oct. 14, the library was installed outside the Clark County Health Department. Jessica Saunders, a parent volunteer for the 4-H club, said the club decided to build the library when the Clark County Health Department was looking for an organization to help construct one. “In past years, Antioch had applied for and received a Shaping Rural Missouri grant from FCS Financial to do community projects. Participation in community service projects like these is completely optional for club members. We applied for the grant, and the kids signed up if they thought they would like to help,” Saunders said. The construction of the Free Little Library took a couple of days. Two other parent volunteers, David Saunders and Dwayne Snead, oversaw the project. The kids assisted in planning, purchasing materials, and constructing the library. The 4-H members involved were Jadyn Saunders, Lucas Snead, and Tanner Snead, and they all enjoyed building the library. “It’s a great chance for the kids to experience working together as a group. They have to agree on each step, so not only are they learning to use tools and construct great things for the community, but they also have to compromise and work together,” Saunders said. The Free Little Library was a great community service project for the 4- H youth to experience. “It wouldn’t have been possible without our friends at FCS Financial. Last year, Antioch 4-H was able to build the serving tables in the large shelter at Omakohak Park because of the same grant. We appreciate FCS Financial and the opportunities they help provide for our club,” Saunders said. Most of the books in the library were donated by a woman who had heard the kids were working on the project. On Oct. 23, Antioch 4- H club members placed some children’s books in the Free Little Library. The club voted to purchase more children’s books with the money left over after building the library. The members will be picking out these books soon and ordering them to place in the library. The Free Little Library has a “take a book, leave a book” policy. All books are free for the public to enjoy. The library is located outside the Clark County Health Department at 670 North Johnson St. in Kahoka.
