Shortly before 11am on Wednesday, April 1, the Clark County Rural Fire Department responded to a machine shed fire at the Norman Hines residence northwest of Luray. Billows of black smoke could be seen clearly from Kahoka as firefighters headed west. Efforts to fight the fire were hampered by gusty winds, dry conditions, and the availability of water. Fire crews eventually set up a pump line from a nearby pond.
Nancy Uhlmeyer has retired after 35 years in nursing at the Clark County Health Department.

Storm Sirens: The early warning storm sirens purchased by Kahoka/Clark County Chamber of Commerce were placed atop poles in this week. The electrical work will begin soon, and the sirens should be in service before severe weather season.
PTO Winner: Josh Brunk won the Dell Computer during the Black Hawk PTO Carnival.
4th Grade Assembly: civil war re-enactors Paula and Kevin Fox spoke to Black Hawk Elementary 4th graders on Tuesday, April 5. As part of the assembly, the students were allowed to wear Civil War period military and civilian style clothing. This is the 10th year that the couple has been invited to speak to the class about the Civil War.
FFA Trap: The Clark County FFA Trap Team took 3rd place at the State High School Trap Shoot in Linn Creek, Missouri on Saturday, April 9th. David Sherrill shot his way to 1st Team All State with a perfect 100 out of 100 score.

Gary Davis, 20, of Wayland, an employee of Gabe Logsdon and Sons, had an eye burned by nitrogen-ammonia.
The extensive farm of the late Colonel Hiram Hiller north of Kahoka has been sold by the Hiller heirs to George and Vera Heinze.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wagner have sold their 463-acre farm, north of Kahoka to Mr. and Mrs. Junior Otte.

E.W. Lillard, on March 20, arrived at his 88th milestone along the road of life.
Esmond Cahill, 17, of Farmington received a fracture of his leg just below the hip, Monday night, when the Ford on which he was riding collided with a mule team in the middle of the Des Moines River Bridge. Cahill and five others were crowded into and on the running boards of a Ford Coupe, driven by Ernest Marshall.
Alexandria: Earl Fox lost one of his twin boys, two years old. He had been sick for some time… Three more of Arthur Downs’ boys are sick with typhoid fever… On last Friday night at Mrs. Frank Shaw’s, thieves drove their truck up near the chicken house door, tearing the door off and loaded 60 hens in the truck, and drove away. No one was home but the mother and the and they were afraid to interfere.
Athens: The weather man seems to be giving us something new to howl about this spring, not rain or mud, but dust. The air has been so full of it the past three or four days, it’s hard to believe we live in Missouri…
Whichever way the wind doth blow… Some heart is glad to have it so… Then blow it east or ‘blow it west… The wind that blows, that wind is best.
