JACQUELINE “JACKIE” JOHNSON
Jacqueline “Jackie” Johnson, 84 of Canton, MO died Thursday, September 29, 2022 surrounded by her family at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
She was born October 7, 1937 in Missouri Valley, IA the daughter of Marvin and Lucille Wyant Moore. She graduated from Clinton High School with the Class of 1955.
Jacqueline “Jackie” Moore met the love of her life Alan Keith Johnson. They were married on March 3, 1957 at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, IA. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2019.
She worked at Harris in Quincy, IL as a secretary for ten years. She then worked at Shopko in Ft. Madison, IA as an optician.
Al, Jackie, and their four children were baptized at the Lutheran Church in Galesburg, IL. When Al and Jackie moved to Canton, they became members of Immanuel Methodist Church in Canton, MO.
Since childhood, Jackie had a great love for reading. Her collection of books was one of her most prized possessions. You could always find her with a book in her hand, and when her eyesight started to fail, her daily routine consisted of listening to books on tape.
Jackie enjoyed being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. When they were growing up, she loved to have them spend the night. Every August, Jackie and her husband Al would throw a pool party for her three children that were born in August, which was the highlight of the summer. On her birthday in October, the family would gather for a bonfire and hayrides. Her love for art inspired her to open a ceramic studio where she created beautiful pieces of art that her family still cherishes.
In their golden years, Jackie and her husband enjoyed finding treasures at flea markets, taking drives along spoon river drive, and dancing together at every opportunity. After his death, she continued to make the most of life. She looked forward every day to her daughter’s visits, spending time on the farm, or getting a milkshake and taking a drive along the river. You could find her riding her bicycle all around town, attending her great-grandchildren’s school events, and enjoying an evening glass of wine. The Saturday before her passing, she was able to watch her favorite marching band one last time, the Clark County Marching Indians.
She is survived by four children; Bobbette Spurgeon (Tim) of Kahoka, MO, Sherrie Leake (Jeff Happel) of Quincy, IL, Dobbie Johnson (Debbie) of New London, MO and Tina Garkie (Rob) of Quincy, IL., ten grandchildren; Brian Leake of Quincy, IL, Adam Leake of Quincy, IL, Stacey Leake of Quincy IL, Jessica Pitford (Travis) of Kahoka, MO, Levi Spurgeon (Erica) of Warrensburg, MO, Jenna Bailey (Matt) of Highland, IL, Keith Garkie (Danyel) of Simpsonville, SC, Becca Garkie of Quincy, IL, and Aaron Johnson (Becky) of Hannibal, MO and fourteen great-grandchildren.
