Sever Memorial Library Launches New After-School Study Buddies Program
By Emily Bontrager
The Sever Memorial Library in Kahoka has launched a new after-school program designed to support local students with their studies while helping them discover the many resources the library provides. The program, called Study Buddies, officially began on November 4 and takes place every Tuesday and Thursday after school until 4:30 p.m.
Nolene James, Parents as Teachers Educator, stepped in to help with the program. Nolene helps with story time at the library, and staff members had been discussing creating an after-school program.
“Cathy James mentioned it along with Pattie and Brenda. They wanted to introduce kids to how they can utilize the library more,” Nolene explained. “They said they needed somebody to spearhead it, and I said, ‘Okay, let’s do this.’ So we just ran with it.”
Study Buddies is designed for students in 3rd through 5th grade. The program does not require signing up. Students are welcome to simply show up at the library.
The program offers homework assistance in any subject. When students don’t have assignments, library staff and volunteers use the time to introduce them to library resources, discuss genres and authors, help them check out books, and encourage a love of reading. Nolene also keeps a book log for each student.
“Some kids bring homework, but honestly, they also just want somewhere to go,” she said. “Maybe we can create a love for learning at the same time.”
Students may bring Chromebooks or any devices needed for their studies. Parents do not need to stay, but children must be picked up by 4:30 p.m.
Nolene says participation has already begun to grow, and she hopes the program will continue expanding throughout the school year.
“I’m really excited about it,” she said. “Teachers can’t get to every kid. There are kids that may not be on the radar that might not need certain help, and they just want somebody to go over things with them.”
The program will run throughout the school year, except on days when school is canceled or the library is closed.
Study Buddies is also looking for volunteers interested in supporting local youth.
For more information or to volunteer, contact Nolene James at 660-216-2360. The Sever Memorial Library is located at 207 West Chestnut Street in Kahoka, MO. Their number is 660-727-3262.
The library hopes that programs like Study Buddies will help students feel more confident in their schoolwork while strengthening their connection to the community and the resources available to them at the library.
